London Evening Standard: CD of the Week 4* Review
July 23rd, 2010 | By TomJones
I must confess at the outset that Tom Jones has always been a figure of fun in my life. This dates back to the Sixties when my mother and I watched the then unknown Tom gyrate his way through It’s Not Unusual on Top of the Pops. My mother starting laughing first and then I joined in, quite unable to resist. It was as if someone had liberally sprinkled itching powder inside his tight strides. PJ Proby may have split his trousers but Tom Jones always looked as if his might disintegrate or spontaneously combust.
Perhaps that was how the knicker-throwing started.
I’m not laughing any more because Tom has made an album that befits his age (70) and suits his voice. Praise & Blame is a collection of cover versions, featuring lesser-known songs from way back when (plus Bob Dylan’s more recent What Good Am I) and taking in spirituals, the blues and good old rock ‘n’ roll. Producer Ethan Johns brings a stripped-down sound to the party and Tom sings the songs with warmth and not a trace of bombast, notably on ballads such as Did Trouble Me and If I Give My Soul.
That the itching powder has not entirely been expunged from his slacks is proved by the guitar-propelled Lord Help and the splendid reworking of John Lee Hooker’s Burning Hell.Apparently, someone at Jones’s record label has made rude noises about this album. He needs a hearing aid.

This album is a blast from start to finish. It ought to be mentioned that TJ wrote or co-wrote four of the songs here too. Basic R&B never sounded better. Just a shame he couldn’t have made an album with Johnny Cash before we lost him.
I celebrated my 60th birthday last August at the MGM with Tom (first row also). This year it is 61 and we can’t wait! If he’ll just keep going to Vegas in August every year we’ll both grow old together. I have been a big Tom Jones fan since 1965…for me he’s he best there ever was or ever will be!
I have recently come across Tom Jones latest work and have since become quite a fan of his. My respect and admiration of his voice, talent and range is huge. My only regret is not knowing this about him sooner. I wish I could afford to go to Vegas to see him in person. Quite a legend!

I am celebrating my 60th birthday at MGM with Tom on the first row of his August 7th performance. I have been a fan since I was 25 and seen as many concerts as I could make it to. Never have I been disappointed. My best friend is going to Vegas with me and is also a long time fan. We are so excited…we may have to get tickets the next night as well!
